Oct 2013:
I really like this headset - it has good sound quality, range, hours of talk time and it
is small and convenient for travel. I got to use it mainly for VoIP.
When connected, the headset works fine as generic USB audio.
Issues - Unfortunatelly the headset takes over your mouse.
Setup:
In order to prevent hijacking the mouse, save following text to: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-plantronics.conf
Section "InputClass" Identifier "No need for Plantronix mouse in X11" MatchProduct "D100" MatchVendor "Plantronics" Option "Ignore" "on" EndSectionInformation on the exact vendor and product to match for 50-plantronics.conf can be obtained using
lsusb
and usb-devices
commands.
After this modification, reboot, plugin your USB headset transmitter and setup your audio normal way.
Update 1: I used to have issue with losing microphone after a while - I fixed it by disabling:
Skype --> Options --> Sound Devices --> Allow Skype to automatically adjust my mixer levels
Update 2: SuSE 12.3 - The headset stopped working after forced update to ver. 4.3 in July 2014.
Microsoft discontinued support for ALSA and the headset does not work with Pulse Audio. I managed to get it working under SuSE 13.1 using Pulse Audio, but only if the headset is the only USB audio device connected.
<WarningRant>
It is hard to understand how the decision was made to discontinue ALSA support as it is the underlying linux sound architecture and Pulse Audio is often problematic wrapper for ALSA.
It is also hard to understand the motivation behind disabling/breaking older Skype versions.
One has to wonder about why anyone would intentionally decide to cause trouble and disruption to its users.
Cutting off older Skype version is terminal to older OS or older phone users without the ability to upgrade.

Update 3: openSuSE 42.1 - the Headset works without any special configration using Pulse Audio
